Truth — I find Yo Gabba Gabba to be a little annoying. “There’s a party in my tummy, so yummy, so yummy.” (Tag, you’re it. Now it’s your problem.)
I find it annoying, but my five-year-old son likes it. And after watching along with him, I can see why. It’s simple, which in this age of “over-the-top” is sort of comforting and certainly nostalgic. Seeing the simple costumes on the characters DJ Lance Rock (Lance Robertson), Brobee, the little green one; Foofa, the pink flower bubble; Muno, the red Cyclops; Toodee, the blue cat-dragon; and Plex, the yellow robot sort of take me back to the early days of children’s programming in the 70′s.
In addition to its simplicity, the fact that songs like “I Like to Dance” get him up and moving make me happy. The themes about getting along, waiting your turn, and overcoming fears are totally valid as well. Since I know that media affects my kids, I want to be sure that they are delivering positive messages, and Yo Gabba Gabba does that.
Yo Gabba Gabba has just introduced a new CD, Music Is Awesome. I am such a huge fan of children’s music. Even if I don’t like it, my kids do, and I love to take advantage of all those hours we spend in the car to reinforce the concepts that they are learning on their favorite shows, or simply to let them be rapt (with silence!) as they listen. At least that’s how it affects my 5-year-old. Since he’s very very rarely silent, this is a good good thing for me.
Yes, the CD does include the aforementioned, “There’s a Party in My Tummy,” but there are other songs that are not performed by the Yo Gabba Gabba group that are quite enjoyable (even for moms), like “It’s Okay, Try Again,” by the Shins, and “Just Because It’s Different, Doesn’t Mean It’s Scary,” by a Beatle-esque sounding group I’m From Barcelona.
You can watch Yo Gabba Gabba daily at 1:00 p.m. (when we watch it!), 1:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nick Jr.

I absolutely adore Yo Gabba Gabba! I can understand how it can grate on some peoples nerves, but interestingly enough this one doesn’t on me. Now WonderPets, that’s annoying. LOL

My son just turned 4 and has been watching Yo Gabba Gabba since he was 1 1/2. He loves them and dances everytime.
