It is a constant occurrence in my house — I will be asking my daughter to do something and she replies, “Huh?” Or I will be explaining something to my husband and he will look up and say, “Were you just talking to me?” It makes me wonder, are they just ignoring me or are we experiencing some hearing problems?
Did you know that while 30 million Americans (and 16% of the world’s population) live with hearing loss every day, only about 13% of family doctors include a hearing screening along with regularly scheduled annual physicals?
Like most things, parents are often the first to sense that their child has a hearing problem. And, since your doctor is likely not to check your child’s hearing at a regular check-up, it is so important that you know and recognize the signs of hearing loss.
Hear the World is an initiative by Phonak raising awareness about the affects of hearing loss and promoting good hearing all over the world. I was so amazed at all of the consequences of hearing loss: sadness, concentration problems, fatigue, stomach problems, to name a few. The list is amazing and scary!
One of the most obvious affects of hearing problems in children is speech and language problems. With the most critical period for speech and language development being from birth to four years of age, insist that your doctor perform a pediatric hearing test on your child at their yearly check-up! You can also visit a local audiologist in your area!
So, how much do you know about hearing loss? How much do you think you know about hearing loss? Hear the World has an amazing website that provides you with tons of facts, causes for hearing loss, preventative measures, solutions, etc.
