Having the kids home for the summer is a big change — for both mom and kids. After the novelty of being able to sleep late, watch more TV, and run and play to their heart’s content, the common refrain of “I’m bored,” often becomes their catchphrase each time they see you.
Although we as moms could think of plenty of things to keep them busy, they are not generally up for a lesson in learning how to do laundry (and the lecture about their responsibility to the family that goes along with it). Because they are all home a lot more, they get on their siblings’ nerves — and can I be honest? — sometime this mom’s nerves as well.
For me, I like to keep an arsenal of fun activities up my sleeve. Frequent trips to the library and the bookstore insure that there are always books around. Even though I often have to convince my ten-year-old daughter to turn off the TV, she always agrees that reading is a good way to pass her time.
My five-year-old son is learning to read. He loves to have me (or his big sis) read to him, but there are times when I want him to be able to entertain himself: when we’re in the car, or I’m doing chores or trying to read my own book.
