I was shocked to learn that 12.5 million American children are obese and that by 2010, an estimated 20% of our kids will be overweight.
Isn’t it time we make a change? Get on board with IU2U and the Fit Kids Act today! Then, check out the four-week Chiquita Family Challenge complete with menus, daily fitness and activity charts, kid-friendly recipes, and lifestyle info.

- Elementary school students receive 150 minutes dedicated to physical education each week
- Middle school and high school students receive 225 minutes of physical education each week
- Schools enact programs to educate parents, teachers and administrators of the dangers of childhood obesity
You can Sign the petition now!

This is so great, I can only imagine what it is like growing up in this age of bad food and video games galore.
A good cause. I cringe when I see overweight children at my children’s elementary school. As an overweight teen/adult, I have constantly struggled with weight issues. I’ve seen 1st graders drinking a Coke with their lunch.

Us as a nation sometimes over look the real life long jesters and unhealthy habits we carry over to our babies. I’m a over weight parent myself and having to carry around all this extra baggage around your waist, hips, thighs is a struggle, being over weight allows for mis treatment, joking, finger pointing, low self esteem, bad health all way around the board. Parents I know we love our babies and we want to give them the best things money can buy, but to lose our children to obesity isn’t worth putting a price tag on, we need to stop feeding our children all this unhealthy food, we are turning our kids over to this way of life because if we didn’t subject them to this way of eating all the time then we wouldn’t be having this problem, lets not think that this problem is brought on only but bad food because children can be subject to being over weight from a number of other things. This problem may not ever come to a hault but it’s something that can be done about it and it starts with “YOU”.

This is a great subject! My children had avocado for their very first solid food. My lactation consultant recommended it as the perfect first food. We never introduced peanut butter either but almond butter instead. Both of my children do pretty well with their veggies and they love fruit. I do my best to get greens in them. I’ll even add a little spinach to their scrambled eggs with cheese. I love sharing kid-friendly recipes that incorporate veggies!
Wonderful idea!

With so much “electronic entertainment”, its not surprising kids are overweight and out of shape.
Now I’m going to sound like an 80 year old but . . . In my day we played double-dutch, roller skated (a.k.a rollerbladded), hop-scotch and ran after the freakin’ ice cream truck.
We try to do some of this activities today and adjust accordingly.

Interesting information at the IU2U site.
What a good idea! The site is pretty interesting, too! I’ve had to push my kids to be active lately and I’m always looking for new ideas.
In a society where kids have become coach potatoes for the most part, I support this wholeheartedly. We need to get back to the days when kids were outside playing, running around, enjoying the fresh air and not sitting in front of the boob tube and playing video games.

I’m all for children getting more physical activity.
If they learn it as a child, a good chance they will carry it to adulthood.
Fighting childhood obesity has to start with parents making sure their children eat a variety of foods and becoming more active.
At our house we have a chart and every one gets a star for completing chores and daily exercise. We give prizes for accomplishments. Thank you for the contest.
I am not suprised to hear that childhood obesity is such as a problem considering the poor nutrition most children get in processed foods.

I think the Wii is one of the greatest things to get kids up off the couch and exercising without seeming like exercise. I remember being outside all day every day playing when I was a kid. Saturday mornings was the only time I watched tv and as soon as the cartoons were over I was back outside.
very nice thanks
Kids have to be interested in something at first, and then they don’t even realize they are moving and exercising!

You know what? Regulating the amount of time the kids spend in PE is worthless. It’s HOW they spend the time that’s important. You can’t have 50 kids in a badminton class if you only have 20 badminton racquets! You also can’t have 50 kids having soccer in PE if you only have one soccer field. One of the PE teachers actually called PE “babysitting class” in front of me and was horrified that she’d said that in front of a parent.
If there’s going to be a regulation, make it a REAL one – limit the number of kids in the class – require the kids to be MOVING for a certain number of hours – SOMETHING that makes actual sense – otherwise it’s just more political BS.
Great idea, we all need to get more active
A healthy body and a sound mind go together. Physical education truly is an important part of education.

Huge giveaway! awesome!
I taught my kids from an early age to eat lots of fruits and veggies. You have to start early to teach them good eating habits and make eating such foods fun. Let them help in the preparation and serving, get them involved. Grow a veggie garden and let them plant, weed, and care for it. Kids learn from their parents, and if they see them lazing around, they’ll do the same. Don’t be REactive, be PROactive! Thanks for this giveaway.

I was an obese child and I know how miserable it is. I think it’s very important to find physical activities to do as a family, and encourage your child to participate in sports or some sort of physical recreational activity with their friends to be fit for life.
What a great giveaway!
Exercising and being active with your children is as important as diet!:)
Your link to the Petition isn’t working or else I would have signed it. I always incorporate banana, pineapple, or some type of fruit into my grand children’s daily snacks and meals. I am so on board with the IU2U.org’s diet and exercise programs for children (and adults) I found some great recipes while searching their web site for the Petition:) Parent’s need to STOP passing down their poor eating habits to their children!

It’s hard to believe that we can’t raise healthier kids in this country.

Our son is not underweight, but it is hard to find pants that fit him. He is almost four years old. 2T fits his waist, but are too short. 3T-4T is the right length, but waaay too big in the waist.
I think instead of making bigger jeans for today’s generation of obese children, jeans should be sold in variable waist sizes. I know fighting obesity isn’t just the jean companies responsibility, but it seems to me that selling pants with standard oversized waist sizes promotes this dangerous trend.

and sorry about the last rant. I like the ideas presented in this article. It is true that there are numerous ways to get in the recommended exercise. It is also true that the parents need to exercise too, so as to set a good example for the kids.
This is a great giveaway, and it brings attention to an important issue.
That you for bringing this to light. Parents need to be strong, say no to video games and set good examples for the children.
My kids are running, climbing, jumping little maniacs. They wear me out. I hope they don’t pick up any bad/lazy habits from me as they grow older.
I love this website. It is important that we teach kids to be active when they are young and how fun it is to be outside playing in a “real” world and not one of video games.

Would love this to help encourage my kids and myself to eat right.
I believe we’re at a critical point when it comes to teaching our children to eat healthy and get exercise. But we can’t count on our schools to accomplish this – this has to come from the home. We can do it!
I would love to have this.
Thanks,

Children will develop taste for what they are given. Fruits and veggies instead of potato chips and hot dogs.

It is so hard to get the kids to leave the cakes and cookies alone. Then you have to motivate them to go out and play because they won’t do it on their own. You can not leave children outside alone these days. You have to co-ordinate their play time with your free time. It is such a struggle to do the right things. Thank-you for hosting a giveaway that can get some better quality food to the children.

Kids need to learn from their parents to make better food choices now, before they become adults. Helping kids make choices like fruit and bananas, and getting exercise, are some of the most important skills we can give our children.
In today’s sit down society, it is easy for kids to put on the pounds without much effort. Thanks for bringing awareness to a problem that confronts our children today-and lets us know that as parents, we need to urge our children to be more physically active in order to avoid childhood obesity!

When I was younger my mom always told us to play inside instead of sitting around watching tv. I love that she instilled the love of being outside in me. She also always told us to grab an apple instead of something sweet. Today I do the same with my children, making sure they spend time doing outside sports or just enjoy walking. I always keep fresh fruit and vegetables for them to snack on as well.
Playing outdoors is best but not always feasible. A Wii is a great way to get exercise inside.

Phys Ed for kids in school is extremely important and it doesn’t have to mean competitive sports. My granddaughters are in a very small school that doesn’t have athletic teams. They do some standard sports, but sometimes Phys Ed means a nature walk or a trip to the roller rink, and yoga is always available to them.

Childhood obesity is definitely a problem in this country. We encourage our kids to play outside and eat healthy. They are very active and hopefully will stay that way as they get older!
I would love this!!
I would love to win!
I’d love to win!
Too many kids are stuck inside with video games, computers, and cell phones. It’s up to parents to set an example and to find creative ways to get them outside and active.

Great idea!
it is such a shame that so many young people these days do not make healthy food choices. parents need to push more veggies and fruits and encourage their kids to be kids and get out there and play
We try to eat healthy
My family loves fruit and we’re working on extra physical activity.
Being active and eating right would solve most of the problems, Thank You!
The healthier the diet, the healthier the kids’ eating habits become, which is especially important with all the dieting issues children and teens face today.
Great information! Thanks for the giveaway!
I love healthy eating ideas. Thanks for the giveaway.
Healthy kids are an essential. Go health! Yeah Kids!!!!
Please include me. This is great.
I would really like to win this prize. The gift card would make it nice to be able to spend a little extra on some healthy snacks.
sounds like a great program
Count me in.
I’m trying to work more fruit into our diet, and we’ve made a pledge to try to walk more for exercise. This is a great opportunity for someone to get some extra fruit portions for free!
I’m on board with the Chiquita Family Challenge.
Great contest…would be wonderful with my 4 kiddos.
This is a wonderful and well-needed cause. In my house, I have stopped buying chips and as many sweets as in the past. Fresh fruits and crisp veggies are becoming the snacktime norm. Thank you!
Such a great cause! I signed the Fit Kids Act Petition and will pass along many of the tips and healthy recipes to my sister and other friends with children to get them active and fit. Any way to incorporate more fruits and veggies into our diets and to get us moving is definitely needed. Thanks for the giveaway!

Awesome giveaway. I myself have been obese since child hood and I am trying to fight it now
Obviously learning healthy habits begin at home, but schools could help by providing more physical ed time and for heaven’s sake stop serving all the junk food in the cafeteria and those vending machines!

instead of going on line to see what is going on you need to get out side and walk around to see for yourself
Thats great what IUTU is doing to fight obesity. Its a good idea to start eating healthy while your young.
The Fit Kids Act is a great way to begin reversing childhood obesity trends. Long term medical complications result from the poor dietary choices being made today, as well as the lack of exercise further exacerbating the problem.
Wow, the coupons themselves are a terrific prize!
Thank you so much for the chance to win, we love Chiquita!
Thank you for a great giveaway. I would really like to win!

My boys are active in baseball, football, hunting, trapping and fishing. Bananas provide much needed energy for them to stay active.
Thanks!

Very practical gift. Most families can enjoy the bananas–except 3 of my children that are allergic to latex. Thanks for the great prizes!
I totally support this
This is great! Our family is playing with the Wii to keep fit!
hmm…I can already taste the fruit
Thanks for the chance & totally support the cause. Especially scince I was an obese child myself. Luckily my son seems to have inherited his father’s genes when it comes to this.

I see more and more overweight children these days, and I feel sorry for them knowing that they will likely face struggles with their weight and health problems. Any program that gets kids more active and eating healthy is good one.
As a teacher, I see kids putting absolute garbage into their little bodies every day and I’m on a mission to change that!
I didn’t know kids need 1 hour of physical activity each day or most days of the week. When we were young though you didnt have to make us get outside and play, we were happy to do that.

It’s such a shame that we have to legislate the basics back into education. I had PE from 1st through 10th grade. Now we have to kick our kids out the door to get some exercise.
It’s sad to see people have to be forced to be active but I’m very glad we don’t have that problem at our house. A little inactivity would sometimes be nice.
I love your We ~Wii idea! I so want to get one of those!
In the mean time we go crabbing & fishing, swimming & to the park & camping!
I am ready to End Childhoos obesity at least in my home.
Plus, I need to loose some weight too!

kids need to stop playing so many video games and go outside and play good ol’ games like tag and freezetag and jumprope and such
This is a great issue to be aware of.
I am fighting this issue right now with my 9 year old daughter. She is the only one of my children that has a hard time getting moving both at school and at home. She is overweight and it causes her hardship I wouldn’t wish on anyone. This summer, I have dedicated myself to making sure she moves at least 2 hours a day. We are walking and talking and playing and concentrating on teaching her good eating habits. Hopefully this will lead to her making better decisions as far as school goes and I’m trying to implement a policy at our small school that does away with the candy and chips and other inappropriate rewards they give. Being in the small area we are in, everything works well except the fact that they are not helping in such a way as to help prevent things such as obesity(as seen by the fact that half the students have a weight issue). It is definitely something to be concerned about!

Great cause and great issue to be aware of.
It is good to eat whole foods.
My 11 year old son is always a concern of mine.
And keeping him healthy is at the top of the list! We sure would love those VIP coupons! We love fruits and veggies at our house! His favorite veggie is brussell sprouts!
Great idea, fitness should be a family priority.
this is a serious problem, and i’m so glad people are finally aware of it. you must teach yourself before you can teach your children to eat healthy.

We are a very fit family, including my 9 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter. Getting exercise is a part of life for us just like brushing our teeth. It’s just one of those things you do every day. Hopefully that will stay with my children throughout their lives.

I work with the American Diabetes Association in Ft. Lauderdale Florida, and am a health advocate. Being overweight puts these children at a huge risk for type 2 diabetes and awareness needs to be made… I agree with you!

I think the Nintendo wii is a great tool in helping kids get active.

Thanks for such a great website! The more people learn the better we can all handle this problem of obesity & do something about it!
Thanks so much for posting about this…and the contest is great! My little brother (14 y/o) is highly overweight…and I’m a strong supporter in making a difference to our future generations!!

One of the reasons we homeschool is that I don’t believe schools put much emphasis on healthy living. I’m glad Chiquita is getting on board and promoting healthy lifestyles!

My grandkids schools are staying open for a lunch and exercise program 11:00 – 1:00. Nickelodeon helped fund the program with a fitness theme contest.
Thanks for the contest!
I think that we should take a part in helping to fight the obesity problem especially with children
I think that this is just another symptom of the degeneration of the family unit, we are not spending any of our meals together, cooking together, etc. and it all leads to eating junk food and snacks, eating on the run, and bad habits in general.
I drive a school bus and I see so many kids that are over weight. It’s really sad.
Thank you for the giveaway!
My daughter and I love to be active together – our goal is to walk in the mornings before school/work!
Thanks
It is totally up to us as parents! Lets be good examples!

Childhood obesity is at an all time high because children stay indoors and watch TV or bury their heads in a computer or gameboy. How sad they don’t know how to play. Scheduling mealtime with healthy foods and activities will “fill the bill”.
This is a great thing to do.
this is a great idea , kids need to learn to eat better and parents should be supportive of change

I worry when I see so many kids who are grossly overweight. I think we need more softball, football, etc and fewer video games. Fat thumbs are preferable to fat kids.
If every child, men, and woman just exercise pior to the duration of watching a television show. No body would be obese. So get up, and get in shape? I recently started biking everyday, and I’ll tell you what. I feel great then I have ever been.
