From the catchy little songs to the quarky characters, WordWorld has quickly become one of my daughters absolutely favorite cartoons. Okay, I really like it, too! I just think it is so creative how they create each character or object out of the letters that make-up that word! Genius!
However, no matter how cute and lovable the cartoon is, I’m a stickler for only letting my daughter watch cartoons that are educational. Thankfully, WordWorld fits that bill perfectly!
During each episode the WordFriends help each other solve problems by building words. Kids watching learn how different letters sound and how to put those letters together to “build a word”. By seeing the characters and objects made out of words, kids also begin recognizing the letters that make up different words.
The thirty-minute program airs weekdays on PBS (check your local station for times) but, during the summer, it is difficult for my family to actually catch WordWorld on TV. We are usually outside playing during most of the day.
However, Summer is also the time when we are traveling more and that means long car rides and even some plane trips. To hep make those long trips a little more bearable (for me and the kids) I will be downloading WordWorld episodes from iTunes!!!
Did you know that television viewing for children raises 155% in the summer months? If your child is going to be watching more TV this summer or if you are looking for car-ride (or in-flight) entertainment, why not give them something that will continue to teach them?
A study done by the U.S. Department of Education found that, by watching WordWorld:
- Children doubled their oral vocabulary skills of words featured in WordWorld
- Children tripled their ability to read specific words featured and built in WordWorld
- Children in disadvantaged households where English is a second language showed gains in phonemic awareness, as well as oral vocabulary and reading words featured in WordWorld
WordWorld was even chosen as an approved show in the Smart Television Alliance “Smart Summer” campaign!!!
You can also bring that word-building fun home with you in a tangible way through an array of WordWorld toys and DVDs available at Toys R Us and Target. And, if you’re planning a birthday party this summer, you need to visit Celebrate Express. They carry everything you could possibly need to throw the perfect WordWorld Birthday party!
