Do you Shmoop?

Like most people who trudged their way through high school (and even college), I remember reading the classics — Hamlet, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms. I remember studying Poe, Whitman, and Yeats. I remember doing a lot in high school and college but I also remember not really understanding a lot of it!

Unfortunately I also didn’t really have a lot of outside resources at my disposal either to decipher the underlying themes or connections in those literary works. I didn’t have Shmoop!

Shmoop is the latest and greatest online resource designed to make studying and writing more fun and relevant for students in the digital age. Whether you or your student are studying classic pieces of literature, poetry, or even historical events and wars, Shmoop offers a variety of ways to better understand, learn and appreciate what it is you are studying:

  • Deeper analysis — themes, characters, literary devices, angles, plot analyses, and more and more and more!
  • Lit Writing Guide — a squirt of WD-40 to the mind (i.e. inspiring little nuggets of ideas) to get those creative juices flowing, producing original thought and ideas
  • Pictures, Audio, Video, Music, TV, Historical Documents, and Links Up The Wazoo!
  • Stickies, Clippings, and Folders — tools to help you organize your thoughts as you read and research!
  • U.S. History Cram Sheets
  • Online Essay Writing Tool (currently in beta)

Shmoop has brought together an amazing team of Ph.D. and Masters students from top U.S. universities to offer a wide variety of ideas and original content on 230+ literary pieces and historical events. Whether you are just trying to figure out if The Great Gatsby is really that great or writing a paper on the importance of symbolism in Macbeth, Shmoop is there to help!

If you’re not knee deep in the classics right now, don’t worry! Shmoop has something for you as well!!! Shmoop also breaks down more recent works.

For all of you Twilight fans out there, and who isn’t anymore, Shmoop currently has everything you could possibly want to know about Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight! Whether you are a die-hard Twilight follower or just interested in what all the hype is about, you’ll love the way Shmoop analyzes the story itself, the characters, the ending, and the myriad of themes. Shmoop also offers some very interesting trivia about the movie, book, author, and actors. And, if you want to go even deeper, check out the discussion questions that Shmoop poses (study questions are included in all of the works presented by Shmoop)!

So, go! Check out Shmoop and all of the knowledge it has to offer! Then, come back here and let us know what you think of the site! Did you find it helpful? What could they improve upon?

With your comment you will be entered to win one of two great prizes from Shmoop!

Prize 1: Twilight DVD and Popcorn

Prize 2: Twilight Book Series (hardbound)

The contest will be open until Friday, April 24th and is open to both US and Canadian shipping addresses. The TWO winners will be announced Saturday, April 25th.

As always, don’t forget to earn more entries: subscribe to our Feed, sign up for our 5M4M Newsletter, add our 5M4Giveaways button in your sidebar, write a post and link back to this contest on your blog, and spread the word via Facebook, Twitter, or email! The site is ok. I’m glad they are still working on it. I think the focus audience right now is High School students who don’t want to read their books. :(

They can improve the site by expanding their collection with the inclusion of modern authors rather than just the classics. I tried searching two of my favorite modern authors, Dave Eggers and Gregory Maguire and ZIP ZERO. Nothing. Hmph.

I think it’s missing context; for most of these works, having an idea of the culture and mores of the time is crucial. In addition, different translations provide multiple takes on the same work.

I went to the site and its ok, has large enough print I always like a site that has that because my eyes are dim. I dont like how it has invite your friends on the bottom after you open up poetry, history… the main tabs, maybe that should be to the side somewhere its a little distracting. All in all I’d give it a about a 92% or a “B”.Hope I win. love popcorn

I had never heard of this site before a few days ago. It seems like a really good database, that I will have a lot of use for in the fall, as a college freshman. I read a of character analysis. It was good, and allowed me to see a character in a way I hadn’t thought about, but gave away too much. It mentioned other books, and gave away information you would otherwise have to read to get. Other than that it isn’t bad.

Wow, I’m in the 300s! I never heard of Shmoop before until I read your blog. It would have helped when I was writing papers, I did it the old fashion way of card catalog hunting. It always makes me wonder, what do they do with those papers after you get them back for grades and then they keep them? One of the statements that make you go, Hmmmmm.

They should make students do at least one paper this way so they know how to do it in places where Shmoop and other resources may not be available.

Great resource for students and hopefully open their minds to being creative.

What a terrific resource Schmoop is! I was really impressed by how well-organized the site is; just looking at the literature section, I thought the quality of the writing of the synopses was exceptional, and I think the numerous options for information were outstanding. What I particularly liked was the ability for users to pose/answer questions about a particular book, which allows for a much more in depth exploration of a particular work of fiction than a student could have in a classroom alone. My only suggestion for improvement would be to add more multimedia examples and links to other websites (e.g., youtube) that could enhance the learning experience even more. Thanks for the giveaway!

It looks like it gets into the meat of the book pretty well. For example, I like the background information on literature when Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.
