Like most people who trudged their way through high school (and even college), I remember reading the classics — Hamlet, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms. I remember studying Poe, Whitman, and Yeats. I remember doing a lot in high school and college but I also remember not really understanding a lot of it!
Unfortunately I also didn’t really have a lot of outside resources at my disposal either to decipher the underlying themes or connections in those literary works. I didn’t have Shmoop!
Shmoop is the latest and greatest online resource designed to make studying and writing more fun and relevant for students in the digital age. Whether you or your student are studying classic pieces of literature, poetry, or even historical events and wars, Shmoop offers a variety of ways to better understand, learn and appreciate what it is you are studying:
- Deeper analysis — themes, characters, literary devices, angles, plot analyses, and more and more and more!
- Lit Writing Guide — a squirt of WD-40 to the mind (i.e. inspiring little nuggets of ideas) to get those creative juices flowing, producing original thought and ideas
- Pictures, Audio, Video, Music, TV, Historical Documents, and Links Up The Wazoo!
- Stickies, Clippings, and Folders — tools to help you organize your thoughts as you read and research!
- U.S. History Cram Sheets
- Online Essay Writing Tool (currently in beta)
Shmoop has brought together an amazing team of Ph.D. and Masters students from top U.S. universities to offer a wide variety of ideas and original content on 230+ literary pieces and historical events. Whether you are just trying to figure out if The Great Gatsby is really that great or writing a paper on the importance of symbolism in Macbeth, Shmoop is there to help!
If you’re not knee deep in the classics right now, don’t worry! Shmoop has something for you as well!!! Shmoop also breaks down more recent works.
For all of you Twilight fans out there, and who isn’t anymore, Shmoop currently has everything you could possibly want to know about Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight! Whether you are a die-hard Twilight follower or just interested in what all the hype is about, you’ll love the way Shmoop analyzes the story itself, the characters, the ending, and the myriad of themes. Shmoop also offers some very interesting trivia about the movie, book, author, and actors. And, if you want to go even deeper, check out the discussion questions that Shmoop poses (study questions are included in all of the works presented by Shmoop)!
So, go! Check out Shmoop and all of the knowledge it has to offer! Then, come back here and let us know what you think of the site! Did you find it helpful? What could they improve upon?
With your comment you will be entered to win one of two great prizes from Shmoop!
Prize 1: Twilight DVD and Popcorn
Prize 2: Twilight Book Series (hardbound)
The contest will be open until Friday, April 24th and is open to both US and Canadian shipping addresses. The TWO winners will be announced Saturday, April 25th.

Hello, thanks for the tip. In high school and college I used Sparknotes.com. This seems like more of an all compassing website.
I love the trivia sections! And the study questions are fun to go through too. Fun. Because I’m a book nerd.
I love all the information that’s on there. Even books that I would never look up on my own – I see them on the front page or the “featured” and I find all sorts of interesting tidbits! Lots of great stuff there!

The site is ok. I’m glad they are still working on it. I think the focus audience right now is High School students who don’t want to read their books.
They can improve the site by expanding their collection with the inclusion of modern authors rather than just the classics. I tried searching two of my favorite modern authors, Dave Eggers and Gregory Maguire and ZIP ZERO. Nothing. Hmph.

Wow, this site is a great idea. I have a teen in high school and a tween starting middle school next year. This site will help out a lot. It is easy to link to, cite or share the site. This would have been perfect when I was school. I really like the feature for writer’s block.

Never heard of this before, but probably will be useful when trying to verify something. Nobody in school right now, so that won’t be a use. Only problem I had was more likely my monitor screen than the site–Could not see far left of site and there was no slide bar to adjust it.
Shmoop is great.Ilove the poetry.
Great site, I’ll have to remember it to use when my kids start doing research papers. They just need to get the word out so there can be more comments in the Opinion section. Thanks!

Schmoop seems like a wonderful site to get lost on for awhile
I love how in depth they go int o the books. I’m someone who hates to get to the end of a book, if it was a good one. This site might let me enjoy the book a little bit longer! Thanks!

my kids would like twilight
Why didnt they have this when I was in school? My son just finished doing a HUGE report on Romeo and Juliet. This has all the things he could have used and since they arent allowed to cite Wikipedia- this would have been great! From what I can see- there isnt anything I would improve upon unless it is adding more novels.

So many great things about that site and I will forwarding the link to my childen’s teachers. The sad thing about that site is while I was looking through some of their information I realized just how much my children are not being taught in school these days because I read things that I know they have never studied in school but I had when I was younger. Fantastic site that I have bookmarked and the only thing I do not like is the site name.

I think it’s missing context; for most of these works, having an idea of the culture and mores of the time is crucial. In addition, different translations provide multiple takes on the same work.

SHMOOP!!!
I had never heard of this site before a few days ago. It seems like a really good database, that I will have a lot of use for in the fall, as a college freshman. I read a of character analysis. It was good, and allowed me to see a character in a way I hadn’t thought about, but gave away too much. It mentioned other books, and gave away information you would otherwise have to read to get. Other than that it isn’t bad.

Wow, I’m in the 300s! I never heard of Shmoop before until I read your blog. It would have helped when I was writing papers, I did it the old fashion way of card catalog hunting. It always makes me wonder, what do they do with those papers after you get them back for grades and then they keep them? One of the statements that make you go, Hmmmmm.
They should make students do at least one paper this way so they know how to do it in places where Shmoop and other resources may not be available.
Great resource for students and hopefully open their minds to being creative.
I home school my kids and this site is going to be one of my favorites. I do a lot of research on books for literature. This site is going to make that job much easier. Awesome site!!!!

I liked the site. I think it could add a topic of the day or something along those lines on the homepage to make it more interesting.
I wish this site was available when I was in high school. I passed the link on to my daughter.

My daughter is an English Major. She is in love with the site. Thanks so much for having this contest. Otherwise we would never have found it!
Personally, I love the quotes. I write puzzles and need new quotes every month.
I love the site! I looked up a Good Man is Hard to Find and learned a lot of new things.
Thanks for giveaway!

Wow – sure wish they had this when I was in highschool. I used Coles notes, especially for books I had no interest in reading, but this would kick Coles notes butt!
THIS SITE LOOKS GREAT TO HELP MY SON WITH HIS SCHOOL WORK. thanks
I am glad it does not condone plagarism. THank you
this would have been so helpful but I’m too old, we were using clay tablet and abacus’.

Loved the site! Very informative plus a lot of fun just surfing around, can’t think of anything to approve on. =)

What a great resource for kids in school. Wish I’d have had something like this to help me out when I was in school! I love how it’s so easy to navigate. It would be nice if there was a way to search info relevant to grade level. Thanks!

I like the trivia sections.
I really liked the Shmoop site, and I showed it to my teen daughter who loved it too. She said she’ll use it to help with her essay next week. Thanks a lot for showcasing Shmoop.
I subscribed via Google reader, thanks again.
It’s a pretty cool site. My only worry is that sites like this discourage kids from actually reading the books and doing critical thinking of their own. With the amount of info, I could write a pretty good report without actually reading the books.
That site is pretty awesome!! Very helpful! And what a great name–Shmoop!

I think Shoomp is a great site. You can learn so much about classic novels, poetry and US History. I wish this site existed when I was in high school. The one thing I might improve about the web site is I would add sections to help out people with math and science. This is a great giveaway and I really hope I win. Thanks.
My son is in high school..and this will be a great help! Thanks!
Great contest really would love to win this one
The lit and poetry sections are great-thank you!
I would have liked this site when I was in High school. I will definetly use this site today.
This looks like a good site for young folks and doing their homework. I found the Trivia tidbits interesting. I’ve always like Trivia. Thanks for having the wonderful giveaway.

Love the site! I’m telling my kids about it. My favorite section is the poetry. Thanks for the giveaway!
My daughter in law loves this series. For Easter I found some candy in a Twilight box. She loved it. I would love to win this for her. Very special person in my life.
Wow, schmoops is really REALLY neat!! I was a lit minor in college and THIS would have REALLY been handy!!
I THIUGHT THIS WAS A VERY INTERESTING AND HELPFUL SITE. I DID NOT SEE HOW IT COULD BE IMPROVED.
looks interesting 4 the grandkids:)
What a terrific resource Schmoop is! I was really impressed by how well-organized the site is; just looking at the literature section, I thought the quality of the writing of the synopses was exceptional, and I think the numerous options for information were outstanding. What I particularly liked was the ability for users to pose/answer questions about a particular book, which allows for a much more in depth exploration of a particular work of fiction than a student could have in a classroom alone. My only suggestion for improvement would be to add more multimedia examples and links to other websites (e.g., youtube) that could enhance the learning experience even more. Thanks for the giveaway!
I subscribe to your blog in google reader – thanks!

This would have been awesome to have in HS and college, I really like the literature section.
Great site for students.
Great site for kids.
i like the trivia section but feel that they should include more current authors
kind of reminds me of cliff-notes, but better..this would’ve been good to help write papers in college.
I wish I had that site when I was in school! I’ll let people know.
That would have helped me when I was in school. I was terrible at studying and writing. Hopefully when my son is in school, he can use the site. Thank you for the giveaway!

Love the Twilight series! I only own a few of the books & would love to own the whole thing! I also don’t have the movie so that would be great!
It looks like it gets into the meat of the book pretty well. For example, I like the background information on literature when Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.
